10 Bands to get you ready for summer

As we all know, there is a lot of great music out there and it’s constantly evolving. The question is, even with all the internet search engines to choose from, where to begin? Well we thought we’d give you a head start by listing 10 bands we think you should keep an eye on. Ranging from Hip Hop to Reggae to Indie Rock and a little bit of everything in between, here’s the scoop:

1. Alborosie


This Sicily born artist moved to Kingston, Jamaica in 2001 and has been releasing a lot of great material over the last few years. His first hits were Kingston Town and Herbalist. His latest release is Escape From Babylon (2009).

2. The Knux


Born and raised in New Orleans, this duo comprises of two brothers. They have toured with Common, Q-Tip, Nas, The Roots, and many other iconic acts. Now based out of LA, they have hit the charts with “Bang!Bang!” and “Cappucino” both of which were picked up for soundtrack promos. Backed by our friend and often booked DJ Cobra, keep an eye on these guys for sure.

3. Federico Aubele


This Argentine has a unique sound that’s a mix of reggae/dub/hip hop/Bolero/Tango. Discovered by Thievery Corporation and on their label this artist is one of a kind. His sultry and melodic riffs will mesmerize you.

4. Broken Bells


Comprised of a unique collaboration of Danger Mouse and Shin’s James Mercer, this super duo recently announced their collaboration project via Pitchfork Media. Described as “melodic but experimental”. Definitely lend an ear.

5. Kid Cudi


Raised in Cleveland, he grew up listening to the likes of The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest. After moving to NYC he was discovered by Kanye West from a mix tape. His biggest track to date has been “Day ‘n’ Nite” which has hit clubs worldwide. Some interesting remixes of his stuff are bubbling to the surface.

6. Dirty Projectors


This experimental rock band is based out of Brooklyn NY. If you’re looking for a new sound, try this on for size. They’ve collaborated with the likes of David Byrne and Bjork and even recorded a version of the album Rise Above by Black Flag!

7. Tarrus Riley


He started his career as a DJ for Busta Rhymes. Mentored, produced, and backed by Dean Fraser this artist continues to grow and amaze fans worldwide. His album Parables in 2006 earned him a Jamaican #1 single for She’s Royal. His latest album Contagious (2009) looks to be a huge success as well.

8. Flight of the Concords


A comedy duo hailing from New Zealand have been getting rave reviews from the stage and the screen. They have played SXSW as well as Bonnaroo and Sasquatch! Music Festival. Their US TV debut came in the form of an HBO One Night Stand which resulted in an ongoing series named after the band in 2007. Funny and clever as they come.

9. Bushman


A St. Thomas, Jamaica based artist who began his career with the Black Star Line sound-system. Raised Rastafarian he remains a very humble and righteous artist. Check out his latest album Get it in your Mind (2008).

10. Iglu and Hartly


This California based five piece has been picking up some serious momentum after breaking the US market at SXSW in May of 2009. Known for their on and off stage antics. Worth a listen and a look.
